Well, I Said It!

By Ng’ong’a

What I have noticed, and this is informed by years of trial and failure but eventually getting it, is that people will be courteous but do not take that to mean compassion. Just like empathy is superior to sympathy and the ultimate expression of empathy is being compassionate, it takes time before you get to the crest when it comes to people. How you manage this transition helps a great deal in managing expectations and opportunities. Just because someone listens to your plea does not automatically mean they are willing to support your cause. This is why the game of numbers is crucial to learn earlier. The more prospects you send out, the better chance you have of getting feedback that you can act upon. You do not just need a response but a clear indication that this person will be sticking it out on your behalf, mentioning your name, or remembering you fit for certain roles when down the timeline something tangible shows up. You want feedback that creates change. So, keep talking to your connections, keep applying and preparing for job interviews, keep leveling your skills up, and keep knocking on those doors. You will find an open door in the end.
